Joyce Elaine Sutherland, 82, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at her home. She was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada on August 23, 1937 to Jack and Ada (Saxton) Ellwood. She graduated from Portage Collegiate and attended various business schools. On April 4, 1959 she was united in marriage to James Sutherland. After living in Cloquet, they moved to Red Wing in 1979 where they owned and operated the Sterling Motel. Throughout her life, Joyce and James enjoyed traveling. She was a member of the Tuesday Morning Bible Study, Red Wing Collectors Society, the Church of St. Joseph and she had delivered Meals on Wheels. She loved her family, friends and all things out her front window-the birds, her garden, the river and seeing the lights of Red Wing at night. The family wishes to recognize the many health care professionals and the Red Wing First Responders for their kindness and care.
She is survived by her husband, James of 60 years; daughter, Mary Jane (Monty) Lundberg; two sons, James Sutherland, Jeff (Lynn) Sutherland; six grandchildren, Heather (Ryan) Lisson, Cameron Lundberg, Emily (Brandon) Goetsch, Scott Haffley, Maddie Sutherland and Ella Sutherland; three great-grandchildren, Ada, Monroe, Piper; sister, Gwendda (Lawrence) Harrison; brother-in-law, Donald Sutherland, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her in-laws, Joe and Elna Sutherland.
Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2019 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Deacon Pat Evans officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children or a charity of your choice.
