Mr. Joyce H. Simonsen age 79 of rural Goodhue passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at his home. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Reverend Wayne Schoch officiating. Burial will be in Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 20, 2011 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joyce Herman Simonsen was born on August 4, 1932 in Wanamingo Township, Goodhue County, MN to John and Emily (nee Jahnke) Simonsen. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He started farming with his parents and later with his brothers. On September 15, 1956 he married Delores Torkelson at Dale Lutheran Church. They continued to farm the family farm until 1973 when they moved to a farm in Minneola Township. From 1973 - 1988 Joyce worked at Maple Island Creamery in Wanamingo and also farmed. Going to auctions was his lifelong hobby. He also enjoyed working in the yard, taking care of animals, watching the birds, playing cards and spending time with his family. In October of 2010 his health forced Joyce to fully retire.
Joyce is survived by his wife, Delores; children, Donna (Mark) Huneke of Zumbrota, Betty Simonsen of Northfield, Dale (Stephanie) Simonsen of Goodhue and Amy Foster of Cannon Falls; grandchildren, Jason, Brooke, Stephanie and Scott Huneke, Travis and Nicole Simonsen, Ryan and Grace Foster; sister-in-law, Mary Tweite of Byron and many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Anthony Schweich; brothers, Palmer, Walter and Ray Simonsen; sisters, Margaret Johnson, Irene Esterby and LaVerna Blakstad.
