Joyce Clifford Johnson was born on June 4, 1932 on the family farm in Roscoe near Wanamingo to Albin and Selma (Beckstron) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Lands Lutheran Church, where he was a life-long member. After graduating from Wanamingo High School in 1950, he farmed with his dad several years before enlisting in the U.S Army in 1955. During his service years he was sent to Germany for one year. He was able to spend one of his leaves visiting relatives in Aasen, Norway, just north of Trondheim, where he met his dad's brother and sister with their families. After returning to the U.S he again took up farming and met his future bride Darlene Auseth. They were married on September 20, 1958 in Dale Lutheran Church, rural Wanamingo and made their home on the family farm. He was able to buy the farm from his parents in 1960 and continued active farming until retirement in 2005. He made many improvements on the farm and in 1968 he and his wife built their dream home. 1998 was a year to remember as the barn was built in 1898 by his great-uncle Gunder Nodvig, who carved his initials and date into stone set into the wall, which show to this day. The farm has been in the family since 1880. Besides farming, Joyce was on the church council, and was Roscoe township clerk for several years. He enjoyed bowling, and traveling with his wife and children in the early years, and longer trips in later years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Darlene to visit cousins in Norway two different times. Many of these cousins have made return trips to Minnesota to visit relatives. Joyce and Darlene also spent many enjoyable weekends at their cabin in western Wisconsin near Balsam Lake.
Joyce is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Darlene; his children, Steven (Deanna) Johnson of Sauk Rapids, Debra (Patrick) Miller of Wanamingo and Denise Johnson of Wanamingo; six grandchildren, Eric (Victoria) Johnson, Lydia Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Michael Johnson, Blake Miller and Logan Miller; great-granddaughter, Brinley Johnson; and one sister, Arlene (Keith) Hewlett of Rochester.
Joyce was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, James; sister, Gladys Cole; brother-in-law, Robert Cole; and nephew, David Swenson.
Memorials are suggested to Lands Lutheran Church or Lands Cemetery.
