Joyce Gossman of New London died June 30, 2016 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota, at the age of 92, following a brief illness. A memorial will take place in Rochester, Minnesota at Grace Lutheran Church, Thursday July 14, 2016 at 2pm. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Mahn Family Funeral Home of Rochester is handling the arrangements.
Joyce was born in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin on September 28th, 1923, to Reinhold and Florence Miller, the oldest of six daughters. The family moved to Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, where Joyce went to school and graduated from high school. She went on to college and graduated from Stout College in Menomonie Wisconsin with a degree in Home Economics and gained her Masters degree from Mankato State College at the age of 55. Joyce served in the U.S. Army (Air Force) in 1945-46 as a dietician. She married John Cahill in 1947 and had a son while in the Air Force. He died in 1950. She later married Karl Gossman and had two sons. They later divorced. In 1958 they moved to Rochester, Minnesota where she began working as a registered dietician in the health care system. Her dietetics career lasted until her retirement in 1985. She moved to Glen Oaks Care Center in August 2015 and enjoyed 7 months in the Personal Care Suites. She will be missed. True to her generosity she donated her body to the Mayo Clinic for research.
Joyce touched many people's lives and was a strong role model for many people. From being a cub scout den mother to the president of the American Dietetics Association and involvement and leading other groups and organizations. After retirement she taught citizenship classes to new immigrants.
Joyce loved to travel and was able to visit many countries during her life. She saw every continent except for Antarctica.
Joyce is survived by sons Eddie Jeff Cahill, Karl "Bill"(Janne) Gossman of New London, and David Gossman of Elba MN, grandchildren, Siri Gossman, Jais Gossman, and Leah Gossman, sisters Joan Reichart of Milwaukee and Janice (Delmer) Watson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Jerry Sharp, Lois Jones and Judy Miller, John Cahill (first husband) and Karl Gossman.
Memorials preferred to Grace Lutheran Church (mission), and Channel One Food Bank Rochester.
