Obituary: Joseph A. Hickman

Joseph Alexander Hickman, age 65, died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at home in Pine Island. He was cremated on October 7. There will be a memorial service at Jim and Danniell Finstuen's house at 850 Balsam Court, Pine Island, on Saturday, October 25 from 6-8pm.

Joseph Alexander Hickman was born on April 5, 1943 to Robert and Mary (Dzielak) Hickman in Wilmington, Delaware. He lived there until age 12 when his mom remarried and moved to Hyattsville, Maryland where he graduated from Bladensburg High School.

Several years later he married Janet Twilley and had two children. He enjoyed many years in the Army after fighting in the Vietnam War with a 5-year stint in Baumholder, Germany, where he traveled all over Europe visiting many of the countries and enjoying tasting the different types of wine and beer they had to offer.

After getting out of the Army he tried his hat at many different types of occupations, owning several different businesses himself. His favorite were any that had to do with cooking. He loved browsing through cookbooks and watching the Food Network, looking for new recipes to try. He was best known for his famous chili and Golamkies. He even made his mom's famous chrusciki, a Polish Christmas treat.

He was an avid storyteller. His family always told him that he should write a book with his memoirs. He lived an interesting life and was not afraid to share it with others. He was able to remember every detail of a story and if he didn't remember you'd never know.

He enjoyed planting and tending his garden, taking the time to watch and help them grow.

He was a first degree Mason and a member of the Pine Island American Legion, where he enjoyed socializing and drinking a nice cold brew, as well as playing bean bags and telling stories.

His dream this year was to buy another motorcycle, so he could once again enjoy the open road with the wind blowing in his hair. Although he would miss one of his favorite things to do, watching his grandkids play sports.

He was survived by his three children, Jackie Lowery, of Oceanview, DE, Christopher (Dawn) Hickman of Olive Branch, MS, and Danniell (James) Finstuen of Pine Island. His six grandchildren, Scout Williamson, Zachary and Zoey Hickman, and Brandon, Mercedes, and Broc Finstuen; his sister Diane (Mike) Gainey, and two brothers, Jack and Bill Hickman.

He was preceded in death by his mom, Mary; dad, Robert; step-dad, Orville Painter; as well as his brother Robert and partner Sandy Watts.
