John Gerard Stewart, 54, of Red Wing, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at his home following a short bout with cancer. He was born July 10, 1955 in St. Paul, Minnesota to George and Violet (Ferris) Stewart. He grew up in South St. Paul and graduated high school there in 1973. John married Victoria Mazzitello in 1974 and they later divorced. In December, 1989 he married Diana Oberg of Red Wing. He worked several years as an auto mechanic, sold Snap On Tools, drove school bus for Lee Lines, performed building maintenance at Red Wing Health Center and Hygienic Services and was a building maintenance engineer for Fairview Red Wing Medical Center up until his death. He has been a member of the Red Wing community since 1980 and he and Diana have served as a foster care providers. He loved tinkering, fixing anything around the house, spending time with family, reading books, riding motorcycle, and annual motorcycle trips.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Diana; three children, Tina (Heath) Mikolichek, Lee Stewart, and Jaclyn (Troy) Hintz, all of Red Wing; five grandchildren, Cassandra and Kianna Stewart, Katelyn and Dylan Hadler, and Ashlyn Hintz, all of Red Wing; his mother, Violet Stewart of South St. Paul; siblings, Ronald (Barb) Stewart of Woodbury, Diane (Doug) Silvis of Princeton, Carol (Kevin) Leonard of Inver Grove Heights, Joyce (Larry) Vogt of Inver Grove Heights, James (Linda) Stewart of Cottage Grove, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, George, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2010 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas Kommers officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Following the mass, John's body will be donated to the University of Minnesota Bequest Program. Burial will be at a later date.
