PINE ISLAND The funeral for John Willie Ruegg will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Saint Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. John Torris Lohre officiating. Burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery with Military Honors by the Charles Cowden Post #184 of the American Legion of Pine Island.

Mr. Ruegg, 89, of Pine Island, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2007) at the Pine Haven Care Center where he had resided since July 2007.

Born Apr. 10, 1918 on the family farm in New Haven Township, Olmsted County, to Alfred and Barbara (Zimmerman) Ruegg, he attended school in District 80. He graduated from Pine Island High School in 1936. He was drafted into the Army during World War II in Feb. 1942. He served three years and seven months in the 1st. Army, 4th. Division, 22nd. Infantry as Staff Sergeant in the intelligence section. He was in five major campaigns during the war, which included landing on Utah beach on D-Day in June 1944 and later saw duty in the Hurtgen forest for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged in Sept. 1945. On Dec. 11, 1943 he married Leila Stiller in Columbia, SC. He was the owner/operator of the Cooperative Oil Co. in Pine Island from 1946 to 1966. He then drove gravel truck for Quarve and Anderson Co. until 1973, and drove semi-truck in Minnesota and Wisconsin hauling milk and cheese for Land O' Lakes Co. from 1973 until his retirement in 1983. He and his wife were Grand Marshals of the Pine Island Cheese Festival in 1987. He served in the Pine Island Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church and was a member of the Charles Cowden Post #184 of the American Legion for over sixty years. He enjoyed traveling, being able to return to Europe for the 40th. Anniversary of D-Day, camping with his family and working on cars and machinery.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter JoAnn Carol (Harold) Rehling of Fairmont, MN; four sons John Bruce (Judy) of Rochester; Roger Alfred (Jane Godfrey) of Minneapolis; Ronald Edward (Debra) of Alexandria, MN; and Randall Lee (Carin) of Lakeville, MN; 15 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. A grandson, a sister, and two brothers preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home Mahler Chapel in Pine Island, and one hour before the service at the church.
