John Thomas Parker, 67, of Red Wing, died at his home on Thursday, June 8, 2017. He was born November 9, 1949, in Red Wing, to Thomas and Lucille (Behrens) Parker. A 1968 graduate of Red Wing Central High School, he went on to attend Rochester Community College, and then attended the apprenticeship program to become an electrician. He began working for the family business, Tom Parker Electric, which he retired from in 2015, after 46 years. John married the love of his life, Nani Cohen, on August 9, 1974, and they made their home in Red Wing. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #343 and the Church of St. Joseph.
John was man full of knowledge and his mind was always working on plans for the business and upcoming jobs, he truly enjoyed his work. Although work was an important part of his daily life, he found time to play. He grew up loving to hunt and fish, something that carried on throughout his life. A yearly father/son hunting trip with close friends was always on the calendar. John could tinker in his "Crisis Center" for hours and was always willing to lend a hand whether it was building a boat house, putting in a ceiling fan or helping his son, Matt with a home improvement.
John was a man's man but at the end of the day he was devoted to his wife, Nani. Taking yearly trips to Hawaii with his "little surfer girl" were some of the best times of his life-his last trip to the island was in 2015. The two of them enjoyed many other special trips throughout their marriage from Las Vegas to Canada or even just a weekend away in Hayward, all were a special time together and often time spent with close friends. More than fun and trips, their day-today life exemplified a true commitment of love and appreciation for one another.
History books--he read them all, or all he could find; guns--he was a great collector and lover of; motorcycles--ride ‘em, fix ‘em, he had them throughout his life, and boats--taking a cruise up or down the river, were all a part of John's enjoyment of life, something reflected in his genuine smile.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 42 years, Nani; his best-bud and son, Matthew; 3 brothers, Sam, Tom (Debbi) and George (Kay) Parker; a sister, Kathleen Dwyer; many nieces, nephews, and in-laws; his Hawaiian family and his grand-dog, Bell.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Please join John's family to celebrate his life and as they say in Hawaii, "to talk story", following the funeral service, at the Red Wing Golf Course. Private family burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
