John "Sonny" A. Mehrkens

John "Sunny" Albert Mehrkens, 88, of Red Wing, died Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Seminary Home in Red Wing. He was born on October 19, 1927 in Red Wing to John and Emma (Thompson) Mehrkens. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1945. He served in the US Navy and Marines during World War II and the Korean Conflict. On November 19, 1947 he married Lorraine Eidem. They lived in Red Wing where he worked for Red Wing Pottery, where he was a manufacturing representative, Red Wing Sewer Pipe Company and the Minnesota Correctional Facility retiring from there as a counselor. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, BPOE #845 Red Wing Elks, Red Wing Yacht Club and the Redmen Club. He also was an auxiliary policeman in Red Wing for a number of years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and also built boathouses down at the Harbor.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine; one son Randall (Cindy Godfrey) Mehrkens; one grandson, Kyle (Flávia) Mehrkens all of Red Wing; one sister, Suzanne (Bob) Thoreson of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Rolland, Floyd and Edward.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. David Reiter officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the St. Johns' Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfailyfuneralhome.com.
