John Albert Holst, 83, of Goodhue, died Sunday, February 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born April 20, 1941, in Red Wing, to Gerhardt and Leona (Williams) Holst. He grew up in the Goodhue area, graduating in 1959 from Goodhue High School. Following school he joined the Army National Guard and then helped out on the family farm. On August 24, 1968, he married Janice Corson in Dodge Center. They lived in Red Wing for a short time before moving to Goodhue in 1971. In 1980 they moved to the country, where they had a hobby farm. He began his working days as a butcher at the local grocery store with his brother, Barry and later began his career with Goodhue County Highway Department, where he drove trucks, plowed and did maintenance work. After 30 plus years, he retired from the County. In his free time, he took care of his farm, where had a few steers and a cash crop. John also had an eye for detail when it came to his cars, and kept them washed and clean. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and had been on the church council for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter, Shari (Paul) Brunner; grandchildren Brandon, Adam, Logan and Alexis Holst and Robert and Kali Brunner; siblings, Cheryl (LaVern) Corson, Barry (Gloria) Holst, Sharon (Chris) Holst, Larry (Brenda) Holst and Sandy (Dave) Grommesch. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, James Holst and son, Brian Holst
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2025 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Goodhue with Pastor Martin Weignad officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
