John "Jack" Holmes

John "Jack" Reynolds Holmes passed away unexpectedly at his home in Red Wing on Thursday, January 19, 2017.
He was born in Red Wing on July 1, 1962, to Burton and Dorothy Holmes of Red Wing. Jack graduated in 1980 from Red Wing Central High School and attended college in Ely, Minnesota. After graduation, he returned to Red Wing where he worked for the City for several years before signing on with Xcel Energy. He worked as an assistant plant equipment operator at the Xcel Energy Nuclear Plant, Treasure Island, and also Board Operator at the Steam Plant in Red Wing. He was employed with Xcel for the last 16 years.
Jack enjoyed spending time with his friends, hunting, fishing, boating, attending NASCAR races and even betting on the occasional sporting event. He also loved his vacation time and enjoyed many trips with friends and family to the Caribbean or beaches on the Pacific Ocean. Jack was voted "World's Best Travel Companion" 12 years in a row by those very friends and family. Scuba diving, deep sea fishing, body surfing were common activities, always followed up by a nice shrimp dinner. From there it was off to some music or concert event on the beach. Regardless of the call to action, Jack Sprat was always front and center.
Jack will be dearly missed by his mother, Dorothy Holmes of Red Wing; his two brothers, Jeff (Cheryl) Holmes of St. Paul, MN and Pete (Tohnya) Holmes of New Orleans, LA; step-children, Bobbi Jo (Jesse) Sinn, Molly (Scott) Matthees and Charlie (Tracey) Stehr; nieces and nephews, Shaiyena and Jaycee Holmes of New Orleans, Christopher (Ashley) Holmes of New Richmond WI and Jamie (Brian) Dillig of Chicago IL and great-nieces and nephews, Case, Croix, Cannon and Brynn.
He was preceded in death by his father, Burton Johnson Holmes, and two brothers, Thomas Jon Holmes and James Burton Holmes.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2017, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with a Memorial Service at 7p.m. with Deacon Pat Evans officiating. Memorials are preferred to NAMI Minnesota, 800 Transfer Rd. #31, St. Paul, MN 55114; [email protected]
