John Robert Hodgson, M.D.

Born November 14, 1914, in Muskegon Heights, Mich., died May 14, 2012, in Old Frontenac, Minn. Preceded in death by wife of 49 years, Ruth Wood Hodgson, and daughter, Amy Hodgson Ward. Survived by wife of 15 years, Adelaide Phraner Reese, and by children Ann Haven, Ellen Stewart, John E. Hodgson, Thomas (Michele) Hodgson, and Laurie Hodgson, plus nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Elected president of the University of Michigan Medical School Class of 1940. Joined the staff of the Mayo Clinic in 1947, becoming chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology before his appointment to the Board of Governors. Elected president of the staff at the Mayo Clinic and also president of the Radiological Society of North America.

Recognized as a pioneer in Mayo's outreach program, which has resulted in many satellite clinics in the region, and major facilities in Scottsdale, AZ, and Jacksonville, FL.

After his retirement, he was active in the historic preservation of Old Frontenac, especially his beloved Dacotah Cottage. His passion for music, philanthropy, and restoration was exceeded only by his love of, and the generosity he lavished upon, his family.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at Christ Church (County 2 and Westervelt Way), Old Frontenac, with a reception to follow at Dacotah Cottage, 28743 Garrard Ave. A private interment will be held at Old Frontenac Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Friends of Old Frontenac or the Rochester Symphony Orchestra.
