John L. Falls

Dr. John L. "Jack" Falls, 91, of Red Wing, died Friday, March 4, 2016, at his home at Deer Crest. He was born February 13, 1925, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Dr. Frederick H. and Margaret (Haseltine) Falls. His family moved to Illinois where he graduated from Oak Park High School, the University of Illinois in 1945 and its medical school in 1947. He interned at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago prior to enlisting in the US Navy in 1949. He served three years in the military working as a medical officer and as surgical staff on The USS Consolation hospital ship stationed off the coast of Korea. After being discharged, he took residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Illinois Research hospital, working under the supervision of his father. In 1952, he married Nancy Geisse and in 1954 they moved to Red Wing where he joined the Interstate Medical Clinic as an OBGYN and started his own young family. Jack and Nancy had many happy years together raising their 3 children and enjoying leisure time golfing, snowmobiling, boating on the Mississippi, St. Croix, and Lake Minocqua, and many wonderful family vacations together before divorcing in 1983. He married Lucille Johnson in 1984, and together they enjoyed family, traveling, dancing, and playing bridge. Jack retired in 1993 after having delivered over 5,500 babies during his 39 year medical career. He enjoyed his free time golfing, sailing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. His strong Christian faith guided his life and he was a member of First Covenant Church. He was an active member of the Red Wing Golden K's Kiwanis Club and had at one time, been elected to and served on the MN State Medical Association.
He is survived by Nancy Falls of Red Wing; 2 sons, John R. (Christina) Falls of Phoenix, AZ and Bruce C. (Shelly) Falls of Orange County, CA; 1 daughter, Sara (Alan Ranta) Falls of Red Wing; 6 grandchildren, John W., Angelina S., Jared B. and Shane M. Falls, Ryan A. Ranta and Noele (Bryan) Stover; 1 great-grandchild, Bodhi Stover; 1 brother, Dr. Hugh C. (Alice) Falls of Lake Forrest, IL and sister-in-law, Jane Falls of Red Wing; step-children, Dr. Brad (Kristen) Johnson of Wickenberg, AZ, Geoffrey Johnson, Joe (Lynn) Johnson, Jotsie Johnson and Kathy Seymour-Johnson all of Red Wing and Char (Kerby) Rigelman of Old Frontenac; step-grandchildren, Dr. Natalie (Luke) Rigelman-Hedberg, Kerby C. (Kailee) Rigelman, Ashley and Mitchell Rigelman, Adam (Amanda) Johnson, Abby (Brian) Freeland, Joe (Maisa) Cappola, Tony (Dannielle Zielkie) Cappola, Aaron Johnson, Gina (Peter) Kobert, Claire Johnson and Joe Johnson; 6 great-grandchildren and his best friend and dancing partner, Mitzi Tousignant, who loved and cared for him in his final years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Frederick H. Falls, Jr., Richard H., William H. David C. Falls and his wife, Lucille Falls in 2002.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at First Covenant Church with Reverend Mark Eix officiating. Visitation will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Red Wing Kiwanis Club, Mayo Clinic RW Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
