John "Jack" Edward Byrne, 92, of Red Wing, died Friday, September 13, 2013 at the Seminary Home. He was born February 9, 1921 in Park Falls, Wis. the only child of Edward and Kathyrn (Sullivan) Byrne. At age two he and his family moved to Minneapolis. He graduated from DeLaSalle High School. He then worked at Wheeling Corrugated for a number of years. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. during WWII, serving in the South Pacific until he was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge, he attended St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota before graduating from Brown Institute. On July 2, 1949 he married Gail OKerson. The couple moved to Red Wing in 1950 where he worked for Durkee-Atwood. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph and served on the Red Wing city council. He enjoyed building things, including his own home where the family has lived for 50 years, and also enjoyed traveling which included two trips to Ireland. He loved Minnesota sports teams and was active in politics.
He is survived by his wife, Gail; three sons, Blaise (Debbie) Byrne of Woodbury, John (Kim) Byrne of Red Wing and Barry (Laurie) Byrne of Chatfield; six grandchildren, Taylor, Erin, Cassie, Alex, Chris and Allison Byrne. He was preceded in death by one son, Brendon in 2003.
Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas Kommers presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
