Joel Rudolph Fredrickson was born on February 6, 1916 in Minneola Township, Goodhue Co., MN to Johnny and Hilma (nee Bordson) Fredrickson. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. In his younger days, Joel was an avid ski jumper with his friends and again later in life when Wanamingo area men built a ski jump at Lunds Hill in the late 1960's. As a young man Joel had a cream hauling route for farmers. He used a Model-T, other than winter when a team of horses and sleigh were necessary. On June 3, 1939 he married Ruth Olson and they purchased a farm north of Barr Clay near his dad's farm. Joel was a dairy farmer for thirty years and liked Brown Swiss milking cows. He also did custom silo filling, hay baling and grain swathing. He fearlessly climbed many silos in the area and would always point out silos on road excursions in his later years. Joel and Ruth moved into Wanamingo in 1969. After moving to town he worked for Leighton Jackson carpentry for a year before going to work at Farmers Co-op. Later he painted houses and barns before retiring.
During his busy life, Joel served for many years as President of the Minneola Lutheran Church, where he was a life-long member and he also taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir for most of those years.
Joel was mayor of Wanamingo for fifteen years and he enjoyed his involvement in community affairs. The town surprised him on the 4th of July in 1983, when they presented him with a golf cart. He was basically speechless for one of the few times in his life. Joel also served on the board of Riverview Manor for many years, was a charter member of the Wanamingo Lions Club and was a volunteer firefighter. Ruth passed away on June 19, 1985. On August 26, 1986 Joel married Audrey Kunz and they made their home in Wanamingo. Joel enjoyed golfing and water skiing.
Joel is survived by his wife, Audrey; children, Chuck (Shirley) Fredrickson of Wanamingo, Sandi (Craig) Vold of Dundas, Susie (Bernie) Martinson of Bloomington, Shari Deraas of Zumbrota and Bill Fredrickson of Wanamingo; step children, Linda (Stan) Sohre of Rochester, Denise (Scott) Ellingson of Hinckley, and Robin (Keith) Thompson of Buffalo; twelve grandchildren, five step grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. Joel was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth; brother, Howard "Speed" Fredrickson; sister, MarCella "Sally" Boraas; one step son and two step granddaughters.
Joel loved and enjoyed his family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Blessed be the wonderful memories we all have of our time with Joel.
