Joan Lu Brown, 84, of Red Wing, died Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Seminary Home in Red Wing. She was born January 1, 1931 to Leo and Helen (Ganssle) Roerig in Winnebago, Minn. She grew up and attended school there, graduating in 1949. After graduation she went to the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. On November 15, 1952 she married Robert Brown. She began working at Frank Brother's Elevator in Winnebago before she and Robert moved to Rochester where they owned Lindsay Soft Water. Later she worked in the office of Velie Ryan Distributors. The couple then moved to Red Wing where they purchased Culligan Water. They owned and operated the business for five years before selling it to retire. Robert passed away on January 26, 1992.
Joan was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek, Minn. For many years she was the secretary of the Hi Park Townhouse Association. She enjoyed reading and playing cards and was an avid collector of R. S. Prussia plates and china. For many years she also enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Florida.
She is survived by her sister, Nancy (Ben) Espeland of Winnebago, Minn.; was "Auntie" to three nephews, David (Margie) Espeland of Gaylord, Minn., Douglas (Fiancé, Betty) Espeland of Wausau, Wisc. and Daniel (Lori) Espeland of Truman, Minn.; six great nephews and nieces, Rachel, Jeremy, Jay, Kasey, Loren (fiancé, Natlie) and Kelcey; great-grand nephew, Riley; special friends, Karen Anderson of Red Wing, Dorothy Kulseth of Red Wing and Marilyn Hansen of Winona, Minn.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert and her parents.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred to the church. Arrangements with the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
