Joan M. Bjorngaard, age 82 of Wanamingo passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at her residence with family by her side. The funeral service will be on Friday, January 29, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Lands Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor David Krinke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2015 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joan Mae Brehmer was born on January 31, 1933 in Potsdam, MN to Edwin and Florence (Haggerty) Brehmer, the youngest of six children. Joan grew up in Potsdam and attended Rochester Schools. Joan started waitressing at Woolworth's in Rochester. While working for Albern's Café, Joan met the love of her life, Norman Bjorngaard at a barn dance in rural Goodhue. They married on November 19, 1949 at the Lands Lutheran Church parsonage. They made their home in rural Wanamingo and Joan worked as a waitress at Pat & Bernie's and later for McKay's, both in Wanamingo. Joan was an active member of Lands Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, quilted and was part of its ladies aid. Joan enjoyed music, dancing, playing computer games, spending time with her family and attending their school functions. Joan was a faithful person, who used this faith to guide her through several family tragedies.
Joan is survived by her husband, Norman; children, Brian (Jeanne) Bjorngaard of Zumbrota, Vickie Bjorngaard of Wanamingo and Tim (Becki) Bjorngaard of Rochester; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeff) Whitesel, Stacey, Amber, Christopher, Ericka, Mathew (Nicole) and Erik (Ashley) Bjorngaard, Kaitlyn (Cleary) Grubb and Carisa Bjorngaard; great-grandchildren, Theresa (Ryan) Tyler, Trystan, Lilyana, Robbie, Kiara, Arya, Nick, Tanner and Zarrick; great-great-granddaughters, Hannah and Camri; sisters-in-law, Loretta Broas, Rose Durhman and Sharon Bjorngaard.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bruce; grandson, Brian Blake Bjorngaard and siblings, Archie, Adeline, Lorraine, Earl and Marion.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mayo Clinic - Rachel Hansen and staff at Gonda 10 South, staff at Gonda 10 East, staff at St. Marys and Methodist Hospitals, Dr. David Detert and staff at Olmsted Medical Center in Wanamingo.
Joan's family would like to express a special thank you to the angels on staff at Mayo Hospice - Red Wing, especially Naomi, Kay, Connie, Kathy, Julie, Lynn and Kelly.
