Jean Roe Vanderlinden

March 2, 1943 — January 29, 2017

Jean Roe (Haugrud) Vanderlinden, whose love of gardening, Minnesota Public Radio and opera was exceeded only by her unfailing love of family (and possibly dark chocolate) passed away unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism on Sunday January 29, 2017 in Red Wing, Minnesota. She was 73.
Jean was born to Clara O. (Roe) and Kenneth J. Haugrud in Seattle, Washington on March 2, 1943. She was raised in Bismarck, ND, in a house designed and built by her engineer father and pristinely maintained by her mother. Some of her favorite childhood memories included learning the violin, attending camp, and playing on the North Dakota capitol grounds with her sister Marcia. Jean graduated from Bismarck High School in 1961 and earned a B.A. in Music Education in 1965 from St. Olaf College, Northfield MN, where she enjoyed playing violin in the St. Olaf Orchestra.
Jean later taught orchestra in the Anoka and Red Wing, MN public schools and shared her passion for string music with countless private students. She delighted in her children's participation in choral music but perhaps even more in her grandchildren's playing of the bass, cello, guitar and piano. She made countless trips to Texas to hear their many performances.
In life - and in conversation - Jean was unstoppable. A lifelong learner and passionate advocate of social justice and fiscal responsibility, she nurtured curiosity and critical thinking in her children, grandchildren and students. She was devoted to the arts and led the Red Wing Opera Study Club and volunteered at Red Wing's historic Sheldon Theater. An explorer at heart, she loved travel and adventure. While at home, she could often be found watching classic musicals (while eating popcorn) and biking on the Cannon Valley Trail.
Jean was married for forty-nine years to H. Jay Vanderlinden, also a music teacher (choral), with whom she had two children, Lisa Kay and Chris David. She was a nurturing mother, eager grandmother and loyal friend. All who knew and loved her will miss her positive spirit, quick wit, and melodious laugh - and perhaps even her generously imparted (if often unsolicited) advice and opinions.

Jean is survived by her daughter Lisa Vanderlinden (Rob Garnett) of Fort Worth, TX; son, Chris Vanderlinden (Lori Brewer) of El Paso, TX; seven grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas, Alley and Ezekiel Vanderlinden, Gabriel and Benjamin Garnett, and Merrik Brewer; sister Marcia (Ardell) Wiegandt of Perham, Minnesota; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces; and her garden of 47 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Abiding by Jean's wishes, her family will gather for a small private memorial service this summer. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would appreciate donations to Sound Strings, a Red Wing 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which supports orchestral youth education (http://www.soundstrings.org/donate/) or to Minnesota Public Radio (https://contribute.publicradio.org/contribute.php?).
