OBITUARY: Jean O'Brien Hoppe


Funeral services for Jean O'Brien Hoppe will be Monday, October 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Pine Island, MN with burial to follow in the Pine Island Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 p.m. on Sunday at Mahn Family Funeral Home Mahler Chapel in Pine Island.

Jean O'Brien Hoppe, age 87, died Monday, October 15 at Roseville, MN. She was born in Lewiston, MN to James E. & Maude (Litcher) O'Brien. Jean met and married the love of her life, Richard E. Hoppe, while she was a student at Winona State College and Dick was in the Civilian Conservation Corps stationed in Winona. In 1955, they settled in Pine Island where Jean lived for 50 years. Theirs was a loving marriage of 41 years until Dick's death in 1981. Surviving are their four children: Richard (Kay) Hoppe of Gambier, OH, David (Carlene) Hoppe of Alexandria, MN, Dianne (David) Rushenberg of St. Paul, MN and Joyce (Chad) Dellatan of Kapaa, HI. Jean has 5 grandchildren: Lee Rushenberg, Alana (Joel) Dellatan-Seaton, Jayna Dellatan, Matt (Kaydee) Hoppe, Rachel Hoppe and great-granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Hoppe. Also surviving are her sister, Beth Christenson, brother, James (Karolyn) O'Brien, dear friend, Barbara Hoppe, cherished nieces and nephews and many precious friends.

After earning a degree in education in 1956, Jean taught first grade in Pine Island until her retirement in 1986. She was a dedicated teacher and loved her students. An innovative program initiated by Jean was visits by elementary classes to the Pine Haven Nursing Home to enrich the lives of the children and residents. She was awarded the Jaycee's Outstanding Educator award in 1986. Jean was also active in the Pine Island United Methodist Church for many years. Jean will be especially remembered for her love of family, travel and Bridge.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and management of Sunrise of Roseville and Allina Hospice. Memorials preferred to Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.
