Jean Ellen Alms, 77, of Red Wing, died Thursday, October 31, 2024 at her home with her family by her side, after a short battle with cancer.
She was born October 10, 1947 in Irma, Wisconsin to Clifford and Mildred (Munro) Hoffman. She attended Merrill High School and graduated, class of 1964. After graduation she and her sister moved to Red Wing to work at the Red Wing Shoe. There, she met Roger Alms and the two were united in marriage on June 29, 1968 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek. Together they raised 3 children.
Jean held a variety of jobs. Besides The Shoe, she worked for Hardees, Red Wing Pottery, and she was also the proud owner of Big Ole's Ice Cream in the Pottery Place in the early 90's, but her favorite job was always being a stay-at-home mom. She retired from medical records at Fairview Red Wing Clinic in 2012.
Faith and family were the center of Jean's life. She was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Red Wing. She enjoyed attending her children's sporting events, and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's events. She kept a beautiful flower garden and loved to decorate the house for favorite holidays. She loved to travel and last summer, she was thrilled she was able to take her siblings on a fishing trip, even if Jean was the only one who didn't catch any fish. Jean believed in taking pride in herself and her work. She was a great cook who loved to feed a crowd. Jean enjoyed camping and fishing, playing card games and watching basketball. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Jean was ready to do anything for her children, and she was happiest when surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her husband, Roger; children, Brenda (Nick) Thermos of Ramsey, Jeffrey Alms of New Richmond, Wis., and Michelle (David) Roschen of Goodhue; 7 grandchildren, Paige (Jake) Springman, Mitchell Thermos, Amber and Emily Alms, Caitlin (Kolton) Heisler, Morgan (Nathan) Haviland and Carson Roschen; 4 great-grandchildren, Ryder, Paislee, Brynnlee, and Blakelee; siblings, Alice Braithwaite, Annie Rehwinkel, Roy "Butch" Hoffman, and Arleigh Linder.
She is preceded in death by her siblings, Don, Phyllis, Harry, Sonny, Arlene, and infant sister, Cora Mae; and her parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2024 at St. John's Lutheran Church with pastor Peter Sternberg officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Burial at St. John's Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Mayo Red Wing Oncology and St. Croix Hospice.
