Janet Day, Nenookaasi Ikwe (Hummingbird Lady), age 63, of St. Paul, died Friday, May 20, 2022 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Janet was a member of the Bois Forte Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. She was born June 30, 1958 in Cook, Minnesota, one of 17 children, to Clyde and Charlotte (Roy) Day. Her father died when she was young and her mother moved the whole family to the Twin Cities where she raised them on her own. She graduated from the Red School House and went on to attend college. She became a counselor and probation officer in the metro area, working with troubled American Indian youth. She married and later divorced and was blessed with four children. She was a very strong women who enjoyed playing bingo, shopping, playing pool, foosball and arm wrestling. She was a part of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and Vikings World Order (VWO) and was known as “Mama Mexi” in the VWO.
She is survived by her children Nuna Herandez Buck (Cholo Hernandez), Mark Solis, Jr., Antonio (Ellie) Solis, and Nena (Luis) Solis; 7 grandchildren; Antonia, Antonio, Jr., Antone, Ayce, Antino, Iyla, and Luis, Jr.; siblings, Stanley Day, Sharon Day, Michael Day, Cheryl Early, Charlene Day-Castro, Dorene Day, Jeannie Day, and Lindsay Day. She was honored by many who called her Mom.
She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings; Glenn Day, Clyde George Day, Jr., Edith Mooney, Arlene Gulso, Margaret Coonts, Charles Day, Jeanette Day, Leonard Day; and one grandbaby, Angel.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Monday, May 23, 2022 at the Prairie Island Marina – Paradise Cove. Visitation will begin 4 p.m, Saturday, May 21, 2022 and continue until the time of the service. Prayer services will be held after the meal on Saturday and Sunday. Officiants will be James Clairmont, Jerry Dearly and Mitch Walking Elk. Burial will be at the Prairie Island Community Cemetery.
