James Glenford Shelstad

October 19, 1946 — August 12, 2017

James G. Shelstad, age 70, of Pine Island, died on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at his home, surrounded by family. The funeral service will be on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island with Pastor Darby Lawrence officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Lands Lutheran Church Cemetery.

James Glenford Shelstad was born on October 19, 1946 to Glenford and Gladys (Stiller) Shelstad in Red Wing. He grew up in rural Pine Island on the family farm. He was baptized and confirmed at Lands Lutheran Church. Jim attended four years at Bringgold Country School and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1964. He enlisted in the United States Army National Guard in December 1965 and served as a medic until being honorably discharged in November 1971. Jim married Sylvia Kleven on January 6, 1968 at Hegre Lutheran Church in Kenyon. One year later they took over the family farm and have lived there ever since. Jim started working for IBM in maintenance and retired after 30 years. He then took a contract through Flour Daniel and worked another 17 years at IBM. Jim finally retired in 2012. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church.

Jim enjoyed traveling, yard work, being outdoors, watching wildlife, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sylvia; three children, Consuela (Bill) Klein, Anthony (Kerry) Shelstad and Sarah (Justin) Kickbusch; four grandchildren, Kaylee and Ryan Shelstad, Leo and Margot Kickbusch; and three sisters, Janice Peterson, Elaine Million, and Virginia (Bob) Hill.

Jim was preceded in death by an infant niece, Laura Million; brother-in-law, Hank Peterson; and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made to the National Ataxia Foundation ~ 2600 Fernbrook Lane, Suite 119 - Minneapolis, MN 55447-7452
