James Robert Sands, age 77 of Red Wing died on Monday, May 27, 2013 at St. Brigid's at Hi Park. He was born March 17, 1936 in Pierce Co., Wis. to Michael and Marie (Fountain) Sands. Jim attended country schools until the 8th grade and then moved to Spring Valley, WI where he finished his school. He entered the US Army in July 1953. He married Nancy Tsukahara on July 16, 1956 in Kobe, Japan. The couple resided in Koshien, Japan until the end of his service in February of 1957 when they moved to Red Wing. Jim worked a variety of jobs during his life including the Red Wing Shoe Company, the Pirius Bakery, Tesdall Motors, George Willis' Conoco station, Don's TV, and the Church of St. Joseph. He also drove bus for Laidlaw and the Ride bus service. He was an avid volunteer and participated in the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, the Befrienders, Faith in Action, and was the first scoutmaster of Burnside Boy Scout Troop #40. He kept his driving skills sharp by parking cars at the Senior Center, the hospital, and he drove the Red Wing trolley. In his spare time Jim enjoyed fishing, photography, playing the guitar and keyboard, and playing cards. In his later years he went on cruises and trips to Hawaii and Costa Rica with his wife Nancy.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Sands; sons, Joseph (Jan) of New Hope, Thomas (MaryAnn) of Carbondale, CO, Robert (Jaunita) of Lund, WI, Kent (Suzy) of Bremerton, WA, Michael of Red Wing, and James (Jeanna) of Red Wing; sixteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter Stiener of Rice Lake, WI and Howard Stiener of Cañon City, Colo.; sister, Florence Lind of Red Wing; and many other loving family and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Richard, Beverly, and Edna.
A Mass of Resurrection will be 11 AM on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas Kommers presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
