James D. Roland, age 90, of Rochester and formerly of Mazeppa died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa with Reverend Alan Horn officiating. Burial will be in Mazeppa Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
James Dennis Roland was born on August 3, 1922 on the family farm in Mazeppa Township, Wabasha County, MN to John and Elsie (nee Whipple) Roland. He grew up on the farm, attended country school and graduated from Mazeppa High School in 1940. He worked in California for several years and earned his pilot's license while there. On March 3, 1944 he married Ruth V. Goetsch n Mazeppa. They made their home in rural Mazeppa and James farmed with his parents. After selling the farm, James worked for the Wabasha County Highway Department doing road maintenance, Rochester Silo, driving semi and doing factory work, and he retired from McNeilus Truck Manufacturing Inc. after twenty years as an electrician. James was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, reading, boating, dancing, gardening, flying, woodworking, and bird-watching. James is survived by his daughters, Susanne Sheehan of Oronoco and Rosalie Roland of Rochester; son, John (Beverly) Roland of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Danielle (John) Pedretti, Katie (Craig) Nagel, Christopher Sheehan, Stephanie Klennert-Taylor, Eliese (Brad) Nelson, Amanda Klennert, Anthony Klennert, Charles Klennert and Mollie Klennert; and fourteen great-grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his wife Ruth on October 4, 2011, his parents, John and Elsie; son-in-law, Gary Sheehan; and sisters, Betty Ohm and Patricia Blakely.
Memorials are preferred to the family.
