James C. "Jim" Kehoe

March 28, 1945 — November 11, 2019

James Claude "Jim" Kehoe, age 74, of Pine Island died on November 11, 2019 at the Pine Haven Care Center following a long and courageous 11-year battle with Frontotemporal Dementia.

Jim was born on March 28, 1945 in Fort Atkinson, WI to Charles Mack and Betty Jean (McCudden) Kehoe. His family moved back and forth between Wisconsin and Arizona several times before he graduated from Mesa (AZ) High School in 1963. Jim received a full-academic scholarship to Arizona State University in 1964, and graduated with a B.A. in Public Broadcasting. In 1965 he applied for and received a full-academic scholarship for an M.S. in Journalism, through the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

In 1966 he married Brenda Jane Sullivan. The two met and had become friends in a yearbook class in high school, and later reconnected at Arizona State University. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage for 53 years. On January 9, 1969, Jim entered the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam war. He exited the Army as a 1st Lieutenant. In 1970, Jim began teaching Mass Communications at Rochester Community and Technical College, formerly named Rochester State Junior College. In 1975, Jim submitted an application for a public broadcasting license for the community college to establish a student-run radio station, which became KRPR. The station was later discontinued, and was operated in the private sector. He taught for over 25 years before completing an M.S. in Counseling. He became a counselor at the college in 1996. Over the years, Jim's service at the community college included 1 year as Faculty President and 12 years as Chairman of the Academic Affairs and Standards Council. He was also actively involved in the Minnesota State College Faculty union, serving on the Executive Committee for 2 years and the Board of Directors for 20 years. Jim retired from Rochester Community and Technical College in 2009 after 38 years of service.

Jim was an avid reader and writer. He could often be seen at home reading a book, with his cat, Sam, curled up on his lap. Jim wrote 2 unpublished novels, The Montenegrin Lesson, and Hearts and Minds Sandwich. He also wrote a screenplay in remembrance of his deceased son, Nicholas, titled Forever Young. Nick died in 1994 unexpectedly, at the age of 16. Jim established a memorial scholarship to honor Nick's life through RCTC. This scholarship was not an academic scholarship, but was based on financial need. The scholarship paid for one or two years of college at RCTC. Jim enjoyed golfing, fishing, his poker group, and rooting for the Vikings, Twins and his beloved Packers.

Jim is survived by his wife, Brenda; son, Andrew (Lily) Kehoe of Kasson; daughter, Megan (Michael) Manning of Cannon Falls; grandchildren, Kira, Kyle, and Mason Manning, and Caden Kehoe; brothers, Dan (Carol) Kehoe of Laie, HI and Mack Kehoe of Mesa, AZ.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas; parents, Charles Mack and Betty Jean Kehoe and stepmother Shirley Mack Kehoe.
