James F. (Jim) Herder died of cancer in Houston, Texas on December 14, 2009.
Jim was born on March 1, 1936 in Red Wing, the son of Harry and Pauline Herder. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and Central High School, graduating in 1954. After spending four years in the U.S. Navy, he graduated from Mankato State College, and married Barbara Goranson in 1961. His work in the sales of agricultural machinery and irrigation equipment sales took him to many states; he and Barbara lived in Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.
Jim was a great storyteller who loved reminiscing about his youth in Red Wing and an avid sports fan who moved to Texas in retirement so he could play golf year-round.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
He is survived by his children, James Jr. Friendswood, Texas, Kathy Longe of Omaha, Nebraska, and Michelle Herder Mount Vernon, Iowa, by his grandchildren Katie, Jay, and Ellie Herder and Emily and Grayson Longe, and by his brothers Richard of Red Wing and Robert of Apple Valley.
A memorial service will be held in Red Wing on January 4th. Memorials can be sent to Susan G Komen Foundation, and Goodhue County Historical Society.
