James Floyd Anderson, 83, of Red Wing, formerly of Vasa, died Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Mayo Health System, Lake City Hospital. He was born on February 22, 1940, in Red Wing to Floyd and Blanche Anderson. Jim went to grade school in Vasa and then graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1958. In his senior year he met his future wife, Judy Nelson and they married on June 17, 1961. He was then farming with his father and several uncles on the Century Family Farm, which was increased in November 1917, when uncles of his mother, Fred, George and Milton purchased 160 acres from Robert Peterson for $14,500. They continued to farm there and raised their three children, Scott, Mari Gwyn and Cathy Jo. Scott stayed to farm with his dad until 2002. Together they raised beef cattle, hogs and crops of corn and soybeans. They also sold Brown’s Seed Corn and Vigortone Feed. Family friend and neighboring farmer, Brett Zimmerman was always around to help and was really one of the family.
Both Jim and Scott loved to bowl and play golf. Scott bowled a perfect 300 game, but Jim got 3 hole-in-ones golfing. Jim bowled for the West End Liquor team for many years, a business he later bought in 1984. It became and stayed in the family as daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Kip Earney took over in 1999. Jim’s health failed after open heart surgery in 2002. They quit farming and moved into Red Wing and later had some time to travel. They liked to spend the winter in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
Jim is survived by his wife Judy of 62 years; son Scott of Lake City; daughters, Mari (Jim) Fairchild of Eden Prairie and Cathy (Kip) Earney of Red Wing; seven grandchildren, Chelsey (Will) Young, Dustin (Karrah) Anderson, Erik (Katie) Bang, Mitch (Melissa) Earney, Brogan Earney, Shawn (Analise) Anderson and Meghan (Blake) Boe; ten great grandchildren, Tenley, Maren and Camden Young, Addilyn and Mackenzie Anderson, Jack and Gavin Bang, Calvin Boe and Joey and Reagan Anderson. All of them brought so much joy and love into his life over the last 36 years. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Kay (Larry) Rop of Muskegon, Michigan, Donna Anderson of Minneapolis, Barbara (John) Flueger of Red Wing and Pat Kennedy of Zumbrota; special niece, Lori Seymour of Apple Valley along with others near and far for all their thoughts and prayers; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Lois) Nelson of Red Wing and Jerry (Sharon) Nelson of Big Lake, Minnesota and sister-in-law, Jane Roschen of Red Wing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife’s parents, Norman and Lorraine Nelson, son-in-law, Phil Bang, infant grandson, Joey Bang; sister, Marlene Seymour and husband Dan; many aunts, uncles, neighbors and dear friends who he has greatly missed. I’m sure the heavenly celebration is awesome.
Many thanks to the staff at Lake City Mayo. He loved the talks, hugs and care given to him and his family.
