Jack "Pappy" Fredrick Woods, 82, of Red Wing, MN, died Saturday, October 16 at his home in Wacouta. He was born on March 23, 1928 in Rensselaer, Indiana to Sam and Doris (McGee) Woods. He graduated in 1946 from Rennsselaer High School and then served in the US Army from September 1946 to August 1947. After his discharge he went back to Indiana and then moved to Minneapolis where he graduated from Dunwoody Institute. On November 19, 1949 he was married to Violet Hallen. They lived in Indiana where he owned Woody's Bakery. In 1955 they returned to Minneapolis where he worked for General Mills. He produced the original concept of the frozen pie crust which in turned he became the founder of Pappy's Foods. He also had the original concept for unbaked frozen foods that were sold to stores. Violet died in 1977. On September 23, 1978 he married Janis Hanisch. He sold Pappy's Foods and retired in 1982. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Red Wing, MN, Elks BPOE #845, Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, the International Geneva Association, served on the Dunwoody Institute board and inducted into the Minnesota Bakers Hall of Fame in 2006. He enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, all sports, his dogs and especially story telling.

Survivors include his wife Janis; three daughters, Nancy (Stan) Begley of Kona, Hawaii, Carol (Keith) Berres of Milwaukee, WI and Donna (Tim) Marks of Lindstrom, MN; three step children, Knute Hanisch of Bay City, WI, William (Linda) Hanisch of Red Wing and Peggy (Pete) Sorensen of Red Wing; grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother, Doris (Charles) Griffin, father Sam (Evelyn) Woods and sister, Sue (Gene) McFarland.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday with a 7 p.m. legion prayer service at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday with one hour visitation prior to the service at First Lutheran in Red Wing, MN with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Wacouta Cemetery with military full honors provided by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54. Memorials are preferred to the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54.
