J. Robert "Bob" Owen age 81 of Pine Island died on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at his home in Pine Island. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM with Rev's Kip Groettum and John Torris Lohre officiating. Inurnment will be in Pine Island Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 19, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
J. Robert "Bob" Owen was born on November 1, 1928 in Rochester, MN to James and Lula (nee Cooke) Owen. He grew up in the Pine Island area and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1948. On July 25, 1948 he married his high school sweetheart Mary Anne Linder at United Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. After working for various meat markets they returned to Pine Island. Bob started working in and later purchased the City Meat Market. In 1973 they started the Owen Locker Plant, which they operated until retirement in 1990. Bob enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards and dancing. He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Pine Island Senior Citizens and volunteered for thirty years with the Pine Island Volunteer Fire Department. Bob is survived by his wife Mary Anne; one son, Kenneth (Betsy) Owen of Pine Island and one daughter, Cheryl (Norman) Ninneman of Menominee, WI; one son-in-law, Robert Edstrom of Cambridge; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Walter, Leslie (Alan) Reab, Scott (Heather) Owen, Alex Ninneman, Sara Ninneman, Kate Edstrom, and James Edstrom; six great grandchildren, Andrew, Natalie, Zachary, Logan, Ashlynn and Gavin; one brother, Carl Owen of Pine Island and two sisters, Mary Shanks of Pine Island and Ruth (Harry) Exner of Red Wing. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lula; one daughter, Deborah Edstrom; three grandchildren, Stephen Edstrom, Lauryn Edstrom and John Edstrom and four brothers, Clifford, Lyell, Harland and Thomas Owen. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Pine Island Senior Citizens or Mayo Hospice.
Honorary bearers are Roger Heins, Don Schutz, Colin Glarner, Larry Reynolds, Phil Hitchcock, Rusty Jackson, and Gaylen Figy.
