Irma L. Brooks, age 100, of Zumbrota, died on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester surrounded by her loving family. Irma donated her body to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Research. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Zumbrota with Pastor Julie Beck officiating.
Irma Lucile Endicott was born on April 26, 1911 in Mankato, MN to Ira L. and Lillie M. (nee Simpson) Endicott. She grew up in Mankato, attended Mankato Public Schools and graduated from Mankato State Teachers College with a B.S. Degree in Education. Irma married Donald Brooks on June 15, 1939 in Mankato, MN. Irma taught elementary school in Morton, MN, Mankato, MN and Lake Crystal, MN. She also taught and was principal in St. Clair, MN. In 1959 she moved her family to Zumbrota where she was principal in the elementary school for thirteen years and the Right to Read Director for four years. Irma retired in 1976 after thirty two years in education. Irma was a member of several Education Associations on the Regional, State and National levels. She was also a member of the Minnesota Reading Council, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Rebekah Lodge, and First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served many roles. Irma served her community as a member of the Zumbrota Senior Citizens, Zumbrota Hospital Auxiliary, Zumbrota Area Hospice, and Zumbrota Area Emergency Food Shelf. Irma was honored to be named in Who's Who in American Education in 1959, Goodhue County Citizen of the Year in 1975 and Outstanding Senior Citizen of Goodhue County in 1983. Irma is survived by her daughter, Bonita (Robert) Rolland, daughter-in-law, Karen Brooks, grandchildren; Nattalie (Chad) Vath , Richard (Heather) Rolland and JoNetta Rolland all of Zumbrota; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Nickolas, & Michael Vath, Aidan and Keira Rolland; nephew, Robert Endicott and niece, Judith Endicott. Irma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Donald, son, Richard Brooks, one grandson, two brothers, two sisters and special friend Les Paine. Memorials are preferred the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Zumbrota, Presbyterian Church of Oronoco or the American Cancer Society. Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
