Irene Marie Gerdes

Irene Marie Gerdes, 97, of Red Wing, died Wednesday December 30, 2015 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park. She was born on July 20, 1918 in Red Wing to Herman and Maria (Stehr) Dicke. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Hay Creek.
She grew up on the family farm in Featherstone Township. After graduating from Red Wing Central High School in 1937, she worked at the First National Bank of Red Wing. She married Hilbert Gerdes of Goodhue on August 11, 1948 in a ceremony at Immanuel Hay Creek. The couple lived and worked on the Gerdes family farm. After moving to Red Wing in 1988 she spent some of her time as a pink lady for the hospital auxiliary. She was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and participated in its programs and activities. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, reading, playing cards and time with family and friends.
Survivors include one son, Philip (Beverly) Gerdes of Rochester; one daughter, Nancy (Dennis) Butterfass of Howard Lake, Minn.; five grandchildren, Mike (Heather) Gerdes of Rochester, Robert Gerdes of Madelia, Minn., Matthew Gerdes of Rochester and Bret (Jill) Butterfass of Little Falls, Minn. and Sara Butterfass of Minneapolis and friend Karl Schliep; six great grandchildren, Alex, Bryce and Mackenzie Gerdes and Emma, Anthony and Hailey Butterfass. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two infant daughters and one sister, Dolores Gjestvang.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Pallbearers are the grandchildren and godson, Peter Gjestvang. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, January 3, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
