Irene Cowden

PINE ISLAND - Irene Cowden, age 86, of Pine Island, MN, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2014) at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Rochester, Methodist Campus.
Irene Agnes Dodge was born July 15, 1927 in Rochester to Robert and Lucille (Morris) Dodge. She was raised in Rochester and graduated from Rochester High School in 1944. She then earned an associate degree in Music from Sacramento College in California. On May 6, 1951 she married Paul Cowden in Rochester. Paul was a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and the couple lived at various locations and bases before his retirement in 1968 when the couple moved to Pine Island. While her husband served overseas, Irene worked as an EEG Technician for the State Hospital in Rochester, and later for the Mayo Clinic.
Irene was a faithful member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Women's programs, and the church choir. She sang with the Pinears senior citizens group, she was a volunteer for the Red Cross blood collection program, was a member of the Senior Citizens Group, and many other volunteer activities. She was an excellent seamstress known for her beautiful quilts. She enjoyed traveling the U.S. with her husband and spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by all of them.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; her sons, Lon (Barbara) of Pine Island, and Jon (Kim) of Mantorville, five grandchildren, Chad, Angela, Jessica, Kristopher, and Lindsey; and nine great grandchildren, Alexis, Cassidy, Tianna, Aleya, Cody, Gabriella, Kayden, Kaylub, and Gavin. Sisters, Lois (Glen) Gardner, Alice (Rich) Witter, Doris (Arnie) Schleusner, brother Morris (LaDonna) Dodge, and sister-in-law Deb Maxon. She cherished them all. Irene was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Loren Dodge.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island with Rev. Kip Groettum and Rev. John Torris Lohre officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday, and a luncheon will be held following the service. Private family burial will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the Pine Island Senior Citizens Center or to Saint Paul Lutheran Church.
