Irene Katherine Everts Newman Brandes, 93, of Red Wing, died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Region's Hospital in St. Paul. Irene was born June 25, 1917 to Ira and Katherine Everts. After graduating from Red Wing Central High School in 1936, she married Fritz Newman, who died in WW II. She then married Robert Brandes in 1946. She was a member of American Legion Aux. Post 435, a lifetime Degree of Honor, and a volunteer at the VA Hospital. Irene and family lived in Minneapolis/Bloomington area until she returned to Red Wing in 2007. Irene was a woman of faith in God and remained joyful in the midst of her struggles. We will all miss her dearly.
She is survived by children, Robert N. (Debra) Brandes of Shakopee and Denice Brandes of Colorado Springs, Col.; grandchildren, Annette "Nettie" (Kurt) Nelson of Bay City, Lisa (Kurt) Krahnke of Hager City, Erik (Jennifer) Erickson of Boston and Cynthia Erickson of Colorado; great-grandchildren, Matthew & Nicole Huppert, Megan & Paige Nelson, Carissa Lozito and Tayla Erickson and many other dearly loved cousins, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Fritz Newman and Robert L. Brandes; brother, Leonard (Verona) Everts; daughter, Katherine Pechacek and a granddaughter, Amber Picciandra.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Greg Strunk officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Derf Hoisington, Matt Huppert, Tyler Matthews and Todd Leonard. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service.
