Inez R. Schumacher

March 4, 1918 — January 9, 2013

Inez Rosella Schumacher, 94, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park surrounded by her family. She was born March 4, 1918 in Welch, Minnesota to Oscar and Ida (Swanson) Wahlin. Her family would travel by horse and buggy to attend church and she was baptized and confirmed at Cannon River/Cross of Christ Church. As a young woman, she moved to Red Wing and had worked at Red Wing Laundry and the Hilleren Care Center. She married Roy Schumacher in 1938 and they later divorced. She worked at the City Hospital and later St. John's Hospital as a nurses' aid for many years. After retiring, she continued to stay active and had been a foster mom at Vasa Children's Home and a foster grandma at the Correctional Facility. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and had been a part of the church choir. Growing up she learned to speak Swedish, and each time she spoke to her grandmother on the phone, was required to do it in Swedish! She later became a part of the Swedish Singers. Dancing, especially the Polka was another activity Inez enjoyed. She was a talented seamstress, having made clothes for her children and grandchildren, and she also loved making quilts for her family, and greatly enjoyed embroidery work, something she was able to do until just last year. Inez loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, she was a devoted mom and had many friends she enjoyed getting together with, especially for cards. She greatly enjoyed traveling, her favorite being a Caribbean cruise, and she had gone on many trips throughout the U.S.

She is survived by 6 children, Lorraine Hagen, Lois (Neil) Kjos, Lola (Herman) Oswald, Larry (Christie) Schumacher, LoAnn (Burton) Dahling and Laurie (Jeff) Edmonds; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and 6 step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 4 sisters and an infant daughter, Betty Jane.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013 at First Lutheran Church with Reverend Brian Scott and Debby Bradley officiating. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
