Ida Elizabeth Bandel

ROCHESTER - Ida E. Bandel, age 98, of Rochester, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2016 at Maple Manor Health Care in Rochester.
Ida Elizabeth Snyder was born Aug. 28, 1918 in Forestville, MN. While still a child, she and her five brothers were taken from their mother and transported to an orphanage in St. Paul, MN. She was adopted by Charles and Ella (Hander) Snyder in 1928. She was raised in Lamberton and Tracy, MN before moving to Rochester in 1936. Ida graduated from Rochester High School in 1938. On Nov. 9, 1939 she married Newton F. Bandel in Rochester. The couple lived in Bremerton, WA for two years while Newton worked in the Naval Shipyards. They returned to Rochester where Ida worked for Kresge's and Woolworth's Department stores before becoming a Surgical Nurse's Assistant at Rochester Methodist Hospital. She retired in 1967. Ida was a former member of the First Christian Church where she was a Deacon Emeritus, Sunday school teacher, and President of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Rochester Rebekah Lodge #10 for 35 years, where she was a Past Noble Grand, and served for three years as an officer for the State Lodge. Ida enjoyed crafts, painting, making jewelry, gardening, and nature.
Survivors include her daughter, Joy Bandel of Osseo, MN; two sons, Ken (Sue) of Rochester; and Duane (Jim Lawser) of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, David, Leah, Gary Lee Jr., Morey, and Laurie, ten great grandchildren; and two brothers, Bud (Shirley) Layman of Pismo Beach, CA; and Donald (Ginger) Olstad of Maple Plain, MN. Ida was preceded in death by her husband Newton, who died March 11, 1995, two sons, Gary, and Ronald, her parents, one sister, and three brothers.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel with Rev. Carla Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Prairie Cemetery in Rochester. Friends may call one hour before the service on Saturday and a reception will be held following the funeral service. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association, Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter. (alz.org)
