Howard George Wells “Makata Ho Wasté”, 89, of Welch died Sunday, March 7, 2021, at the Benedictine Living Community – St. Crispins. He was born on June 12, 1931, in Red Wing to George and Cecelia (Johnson) Wells. He graduated in 1950 from Red Wing Central High School and then served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1954. He worked for local businesses over the years, and was also an Elders advocate for the Prairie Island Indian Community in his later years. On May 23, 1998, he was united in marriage to Gail Wannebo, until her death on December 22, 2018. He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54 and the Burnson-Lillyblad VFW #1218. He deeply enjoyed baseball, having played in his younger years for the Miesville Mudhens, Red Wing Aces and the Bay City Bombers. His passion for driving and his love and concern for his fellow person took him near and far to spend time with those he loved most. All along the journey telling the local history, his memories, and experiences of those people in those places.
Howard is survived by one brother, John (Marti) Wells; one niece, Leah (Eric) Johnson; two nephews, Mitchell (Calli) Wells and Andrew (Alyssa) Wells; grandchildren, Seth and Colin Johnson, Adam, Amara and Aiven Wells and Nolan Wells; Gail’s family, Susan (John) O’Connell, Mark (Amy) Westergarrd and Kristin Wannebo along with the grandchildren and great grandchildren he shared with Gail; and numerous cousins, godchildren and other family and friends.
A walk- through visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Masks and social distancing are required.
