Howard Lawrence Vieths, age 78, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. He was born on March 15, 1929, in Red Wing, to Arthur and Ruth (Nord) Vieths. He lived with his family in the Goodhue area and attended Goodhue Schools. He served in the U.S. Air Force from December 28, 1950, to December 3, 1954, in Germany. He married Barbara Patten on July 23, 1955, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hay Creek. They lived in the Red Wing area. He worked as a self-employed mechanic and as a fleet mechanic for Armour Star. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hay Creek; Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54 and Burnson-Lillyblad VFW Post #1218. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, cats and birds and restoring antique tractors.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Red Wing; three children, Bill (Ann) Vieths of Miesville, Pamela Vieths of Red Wing, and Renae (Art) Hazeman of Belle Creek; a niece whom he raised, Stacy Bjelland, of Apple Valley; eleven grandchildren; two sisters, Muriel King of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ginger (Mel) Ostrander of South Saint Paul; numerous nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hay Creek with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 4 � 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson - Mahn Chapel with an American Legion prayer service at 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the time of services Wednesday at the church. Pallbearers will be Christopher, Catie and Travis Vieths, Angela and Alexander Miller and Ryan Hazeman. Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Baker, Bob Riedel, Jim Clear and Del Anderson.
