Howard Nadeau, 85, of Red Wing died Friday, June 5, 2020 at his home. He was born February 8, 1935, the youngest of six children to Eugene and Irene (Hutchson) Nadeau.
In the summer of 1952, Howard spotted a brown-haired, brown-eyed girl that was new to Red Wing. Falling in love at first sight, he asked his cousin to introduce them. He knew then that she was the one, and he married Marlene Furne on December 25, 1952. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before Marlene's sudden passing in August of 2010.
Howard gladly gave over 40 years of service to the Red Wing Shoe Company where he was one of the last people who performed every job there was in the making of a boot. He enjoyed going to work every day and especially loved his last job there in product development.
When Howard was not working, he would be over on the island mowing or working at the cottage that they built. Through the years, Howard and Marlene taught many people to waterski on the river. After waterskiing, he would be up at the cottage grilling dinner for all to enjoy.
Howard was a charter member of the Red Wing Soaring Club where he enjoyed gliding along the bluffs and loved landing on Lake Pepin in the wintertime. He was a longtime member of the Red Wing Gun Club where he participated in many of their shooting tournaments through the years. He also enjoyed his time as an Explorer Scout Leader helping many boys complete their projects and learn new skills.
Howard had hobbies that were very dear to him including feeding the birds on his deck all year long. We would tease him that he was the only "5 Star bird-resort" in Red Wing. He would fill a paint-roller pan with water allowing a deep and shallow end for the birds. Then he heated the water so the birds could enjoy fresh water all winter. He also enjoyed photography which was a passion of his until everything went digital. He was in the process of sorting his thousands of slides to share with his family and friends. After retiring, his ultimate hobby was traveling with Marlene and his daughter Debbii, son-in-law Rick, and their two boys all over the world. They visited Germany, Austria, and London to name a few.
He is survived by two daughters: Debbii (Rick) Roth of Alpharetta, GA and Diane (Dave) Hallstrom of Red Wing, MN, two grandsons: Matthew (Holly) Roth of Justin, TX, Christopher (Abigail) Roth of Cumming, GA, four great-grandchildren: Troy LaPlaca, Jake, and Molly Roth, of Cumming, GA, and Caroline Roth, of Justin, TX, one brother, Louie (Marion) Nadeau of Red Wing, MN, sister-in-law Donna Nadeau of Onalaska, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife Marlene, three sisters: Doris Von Bargen, Grace Harris, Audrey Carlson, and one brother Fredrick Nadeau.
The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you for the wonderful care that Howard received from Mayo Clinic Health System Red Wing Hospice. Their support and love helped to give Dad a quality of life he would not have otherwise had this last year. Celebration of Life will be from 2-5 p.m., Friday, July 17, 2020 at the Elks Club in Red Wing. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
