Herbert Otto Getschmann age 79 of Lake City passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at his home.

Herbert was born January 26, 1930 in Wabasha to Otto & Mary (Kalaski) Getschmann. He grew up in Wabasha and joined the Army in 1950, he served during the Korean War, during of which he served two tours of duty, and he was discharged in 1951. He married Vernis DeFrang on February 11, 1950 in Wabasha. They lived in Wabasha until 1958 when they moved to their farm in Mount Pleasant Township. Herbert worked for the Railroad with his father for a short time; he then worked construction throughout the Midwest for Local 512 Iron Workers Union for 35 years. He then farmed full time with his family. Vernis passed away January 13, 1995. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City, VFW Post 8729, and American Legion Post 110.

Survived by three daughters, Karen (Rick) Thorie of Oak Center, Kathy (Raymond) Lafferty of Lake City, Barb Getschmann of Lake City; two sons, Charles & Randy of Lake City; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters Eva Newman of Dassel, MN, Yvonne Blim of Wabasha, brother, Otto Getschmann of Wabasha. Special friend Ramona DeFrang. He was preceded in death by his wife Vernis, son Gary, three brothers, Robert, Frederick, Eldeen; two sisters, Mary Petroff and Esther Getschmann.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City at 11a.m. with Father Richard Durnik officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be Friday from 5p.m. to 8p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City, with a prayer service at 7:30. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church. Military Honors will be performed by Lake City VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post 110.
