BYRON - Herbert A. Gerlitz, 78, of Byron, formerly of Rochester, died Sunday (Jan. 2, 2011) at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, after a lengthy battle with kidney cancer.
Herbert Arthur Gerlitz was born October 8, 1932 at Delavan, MN to Edward and Henrietta (Schirmer) Gerlitz. He was baptized & confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Easton, MN. He graduated from Delavan High School in 1950 and then attended Mankato Commercial College. He worked with the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C. for a year. He joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He attended Mankato Commercial College again until 1956 when he was employed by Rochester Savings & Loan. They merged with Olmsted Federal and then Midwest Federal. Herb married Clara Ann Ellefson on June 9, 1956 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jasper, MN. The couple lived in Rochester until 2001 when they moved to a townhome in Byron. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a treasurer and was on various other committees at Zumbro Lutheran Church. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, Kellogg PTSA, was a member of Roc 8's, and enjoyed playing "500" with friends. He took the family water skiing at the Mississippi River. He loved to fish at various lakes in northern Minnesota (especially Lake Vermilion and Gull Lake) and Canada. He was an avid Twins fan. Travel included Alaska and Hawaii, as well as visiting most of the other states. Europe, Dominican Republic, and Mexico were also toured.
He is survived by his wife, Clara; his brother, Willard of Minneapolis, MN; a daughter, Brenda (Michael) Gray, and their children, Patrick & Amanda of Orlando, Florida; two sons, Bruce (Vickye), and their children, Bryce, Connor, Erik, and Dustin, of Zionsville, Indiana; and Glenn (Fiance', Lisa) and her children, Kyle, Tristen, and Kenna, of Apple Valley, MN. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and also by infant identical twin sons, Bradley and Brian.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester with Rev. Vern Christopherson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home Rochester Chapel, and one hour before the service at the church.
