Helen L. Schulz

Helen Louise Schulz, 78, of Albert Lea, formerly of Red Wing, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Mayo Health Systems in Mankato. She was born December 27, 1936 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Carl Edward and Aleda Louise (Sethre) Magnuson. She grew up and attended schools in Red Wing and was a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College. She married Elroy John Schulz on December 21, 1963. She raised three children while teaching in various school systems. She was an avid quilter and gardener and also loved reading and following the news. In her retirement she also enjoyed taking cruises. Elroy died March 30, 2008.

Survivors include her three children: Sarah (Marshall) Martin of Alexandria, VA, Jim (Paula) Schulz of Detroit Lakes and Steve (Jodi) Schulz of Albert Lea; seven grandchildren: Zachary, Julia, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Margaret, Kylee and Sophia; and one sister, Lilah (Jurgen) Piper of Bristol, NH. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Memorial service will be 12 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Chaplin Debby Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Goodhue at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A reception will follow the service at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Minnesota Public Radio.
