Helen (Schendel) Sabean

February 12, 1915 — September 5, 2016

Helen Josephine (Schendel) Sabean, 101, of Red Wing, died Monday, September 5, 2016 at her home at the Downtown Plaza, where she has resided for the past 15 years. She was born on February 12, 1915 in Hager City, Wis., to Leslie and Hilda (Bjornstad) Wiberg. She grew up on her parent's farm and graduated from Red Wing High School in 1933. On September 5, 1933 she married Larry Schendel, who owned Larry's Lunch on Plum Street. They had 17 wonderful years together, raising their six children. In July 1950, Larry died unexpectedly with a heart attack. Helen continued to manage Larry's Lunch with very faithful help and also raise her children ages 3-16. After 10 years she moved the business to Highway 61. With a new building and location, the business name was changed to Larry's Broiler adding more space and seating. She continued to manage the business. In June 1963 she married George Sabean. They enjoyed 30 years together until his death in 1993. They enjoyed many trips together in the United States and a few trips overseas. Helen retired in 1971 when her son Dan took over the business, after he returned from serving in the Navy. Helen was a wonderful mother, homemaker and hostess. She enjoyed sewing and entertaining and the table was always filled with family, friends and good home cooking. Helen enjoyed life to the fullest with her family and church friends being her priority. She was a lifelong active member of First Lutheran Church.

Survivors include six children, Connie Otteson of Sri Lanka, Karen (Bob) Nybo of Red Wing, Hope (Steve) Friese of Stewartville, Daniel (Jomarie) Schendel of Red Wing, Michael (Charlotte) Schendel of Montrose, Colo., and Peter (Marilyn) Schendel of Helena, Mont.; 15 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; two step-daughters, Corrine Meyers of Minneapolis and Georgene (Michael) Glasgow of St. Paul and many nieces and nephews.
