Helen Johnson

Matilda "Helen" Irene Johnson, 91, Red Wing, died Monday, April 13, 2015 at Mayo Health Systems, Red Wing. She was born October 31, 1923 in Sisseton, SD, the daughter of August and Lucy (Quinn) Block. Her parents died when she was very young so she went to Immaculate Conception Boarding School in Stephen Crow Creek Reservation, SD. She attended school there through high school then moved to Red Wing to live near her sister. While she was waitressing at Maid Rite, she met Maynard Johnson. They were married in Zumbrota on June 15, 1946 and made their home in Red Wing. She enjoyed needlework, fishing, camping, jigsaw puzzles and spending time with family.

Survivors include one daughter: Jean (Steve) Arnold of Menomonie, WI; granddaughters: Sherri (Mike) Stensland and Patricia (Doug) Hundly all of Red Wing, Sarah (Larry) Stokes of Lake City and Marney Arnold of Red Wing; five great-grandchildren: Emily, Spencer, Briana, Taylor and Jada; and one great-great-grandchild: Maddy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maynard; one son, Wayne Johnson; three sisters, Fran Smith, Mary Otto and Augusta Thompson.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Deacon Pat Evens officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred to Red Wing Area Hospice.
