EYOTA - Harold A. Wilson, 84, of Eyota, died Monday (June 27, 2011) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Harold Alfred Sherman Wilson was born Dec. 21, 1926 on the family farm near Oslo, Dodge County, MN to Egbert and Mathilda (Grovdahl) Wilson. He was baptized and confirmed at West St. Olaf Lutheran Church, near Oslo, and attended grade school at Gilderhaus Dist. # 59 in Dodge County. He graduated from Hayfield High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He trained at the Great Lakes Naval Base and served aboard the USS Scuptor AK 103, USS PC 824, and the USS Indiana BB58 in the South Pacific during World War II. After his discharge he attended Mankato State College, and graduated from Winona State College. He taught 8th grade in Storden and two rural Schools in Dodge County. He was appointed Superintendent of Schools for Dodge County. He married La Donna Van Norman on July 21, 1951 at the Windom Methodist Church in Windom, MN. The couple moved to Rochester in 1961 where he was employed by IBM for 29 years in Quality Assurance, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church of Eyota and the Eyota American Legion Post #551, and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross with local and national disasters.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters Kim (Steve) Squillace, and Lynn (Dennis) Kiesel both of Duluth; and Sue (Mitch) Buckland of Crystal, MN; his son Gary of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters Esther Wilson of Hayfield; and Eunice Dell of South Haven, MN; seven grandchildren Sean, Tai, Jesse, Kierra, Alex, Laura, and Tony. Five sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Faith United Methodist Church in Eyota with Pastors Mark and Deanna Woodward officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by Eyota American Legion Post #551. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Paws and Claws, American Red Cross, or the Lenora Church.
