Harold H. Roberts, age 88 of Pine Island died on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems - Rochester, St. Marys Campus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Church of St. Michael in Pine Island by Father Randal Kasel. Burial with military honors will be in the Pine Island Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the mass at the church on Monday.
Harold Henry Roberts was born on January 21, 1931 in rural Millville, MN to Henry and Florence (nee Stillwell) Roberts. At an early age, Harold and his siblings were placed into St. Joseph's orphanage in Wabasha. Harold moved around to several foster homes until age 17 when he taken in by the Matt Poncelet family in Bellechester. Harold worked on the farm until he entered the U. S. Army on May 9, 1952. He served in Okinawa during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on April 2, 1954. He returned to the Bellechester area and worked as a farmhand and at Federal Mogul in Lake City. In 1957 he started working for IBM in Rochester. On June 27, 1959 he married Jane Behrns at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellechester. They lived in Rochester for one year before moving to Pine Island in 1960. Harold retired from IBM in 1987 after thirty years. Harold was a member of Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184, Knights of Columbus Council #2751 in Bellechester and the Church of St. Michael. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, driving his tractor on their hobby farm and casino hopping.
Harold is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Rhonda (Terry) Hubbard of Kasson; son, James (Vicki) Roberts of New Richland; granddaughter, Lauren Hubbard of Rochester; step-grandsons, Cameron (Kelsey) Winkels of Owatonna and Chandler (Lindsey) Winkels of Eyota; foster siblings, Betty Cronin, Marge (Gervase) Majerus, Nick (Jeannette) Poncelet and Dennis (Pam) Poncelet.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Norman, Clarence and Grace and foster brothers, James and Fritz Poncelet.
