Harold Ehlers

Harold Leslie Ehlers, 92, Red Wing, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at Fairview Seminary Home. He was born July 16, 1916 in Pepin County, Wisconsin, the son of Gustav and Laura (Juliot) Ehlers. He was schooled in Lake City, MN and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. He served in the U. S. Army from September 4, 1940 to October 12, 1945 during World War II in the Aleutian Islands and the European Theatre. He married Berniece Roberts on December 16, 1945 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Tuesday, Dec. 16th. He worked at the Lake City Nursery and Jewell Nursery in Lake City, then at Red Wing Shoe for 36 plus years, retiring in 1981. They moved to Red Wing in 1947. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City, a lifetime member of the Disabled Veterans of America and a member of Teamsters Local 160. He was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life.

Survivors include his wife, Berniece of Red Wing; three sons, Duane (Linda) of Rapid City, SD, Ronald (Wendy) and Russell (Brenda) Ehlers, all of Red Wing; six grandchildren: Timothy and Jonathan Ehlers, Michelle Strom, Michael Ehlers, Laura Bricker and Katie Ehlers; seven great-grandchildren; Stephanie and Brittany Ehlers, Samantha Ehlers, Jamie Crawford-Ehlers, Brianna Strom, Hailey and Dixon Ehlers; one sister, Anna Zillgitt of Asheville, NC. He was preceded in death by one brother, LeRoy Ehlers.

Memorial service with military honors will be 2 p. m. Saturday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Randall Johnson officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to the Goodhue County Veterans Transportation Fund.
