Harold D. "Bud" Ames

Harold D. "Bud" Ames, age 95, of Rochester, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2013) at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Rochester. Born Oct. 11, 1918 in Johnson City, NY he was raised and graduated from high school there in 1937. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater including the battle of Guadalcanal, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Bud attended the State University of New York in Canton, NY, graduating with a degree in Drafting. On June 26, 1948 he married Mildred "Millie" Ames in Redwood NY; they were married for 65 years. He started his career as a Draftsman with IBM in Endicott, NY in 1950, and transferred to Rochester in 1958, retiring on May 1, 1981. After his retirement he enjoyed many years of family camping and traveling. He also volunteered in the Junior High woodworking classes and worked for the High School Hockey games at the Recreation Center. His memberships include Christ United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts of America, the Rochester Senior Citizens Center, Rochester Masonic Lodge #21 A.F. & A.M. where he was a 50 year member, Halcyon Chapter #8, the Civil War Roundtable, the IBM Alumni Club, and the Marine Corps League - Thor Detachment. Bud, legally blind was dedicated to wood working as one of his loves, saying he liked the looks of it, the feel of it, and the smell of it, and continued making craft items, and toys for tots.

Survivors include his wife, Millie, sons, Stephen C. of Casper, WY; Kenneth R. (Catherine) of Carlsbad, CA; and Bryan J. of Rochester; one granddaughter; one grandson; and three great granddaughters. His brother, sister, and daughter-in-law, preceded him in death.

Bud donated his body to the Mayo Foundation for Research. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2014) at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel with Rev. Nancy Wheeler Handlon of Christ United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service, and a light lunch will be held following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Boy Scouts, Christ United Methodist Church, or charity of choice.
