Harlow Clarence Carlson, age 71, of Hastings, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born November 12, 1941, in Red Wing, to Clarence and Evelyn (Lindstrom) Carlson. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1959, and attended two years at the U of MN until being drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam era. He was honorably discharged in 1966. He married Karen Tessmer on June 14, 1969 at Salem Lutheran Church in Greenfield, MN. They lived in Inver Grove Heights and then moved to Hastings. He was employed at Unisys for 26 years, retiring due to disability. Harlow's heart was in farming though, and he farmed his home farm the entire time he was working. He loved fishing, hunting, dancing, and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hastings and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Karen of Hastings; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Timm of Eagan; Brother-in-law, Carl (Sara) Tessmer; nephews, Isaac Tessmer and Jacob (Ashley) Tessmer; nieces, Greta (Lucas) McNair and Carla Tessmer; grandnephew, Henry Tessmer; grandnieces, Savannah and Millie Tessmer all of Earlham, IA; aunt, Doris Larson; uncles, Lloyd and Bob Lindstrom and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Carlson; mother, Evelyn Duncan; sister, Judith Carlson; brother, Ivan Carlson.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 202 8th St. W, Hastings, MN, with Reverend Jonathan Zimpelmann officiating. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be 4- 7p.m. Monday, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Hastings, and one hour prior to the service. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
