Harlan Ben Shirk

Harlan Ben Shirk, 93, of Red Wing, MN, formerly of Waterloo, IA, died Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Red Wing Heath Care Community.Harlan was born February 22, 1922 in Maquoketa, Iowa, son of Vern and Bessie Shirk, the second oldest of 8 brothers and sisters. He married Alice Shirk in Omaha, Nebraska on November 26, 1945.
Harlan entered the U. S. Navy in September of 1942. He served aboard the USS Acorn and was later assigned as part of an occupation force on the Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands in the Pacific theater during WWII. After returning from the war and marrying Alice, he worked for Carnation & Co. until his retirement. He then worked in insurance sales with Life Investors, and took on other jobs including delivering groceries to shut-ins. Harlan served as President of the Swiss Valley Credit Union, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was also a member of South Waterloo Church of the Brethren. Of all his accomplishments and activities, he most enjoyed being a grandfather - both to his own grandchildren and all the daycare children he and Alice cared for over the years.

Harlan is survived by: wife Alice Shirk; sons Dan (Yvonne) Shirk and Jon (Jane) Shirk; grandchildren Amy Shirk; Joshua Shirk; Zachary Shirk, Nathan Shirk, Maggie Shirk and Christopher Shirk; great granddaughter Avayla Shirk; and siblings Marion Collins, Donald Shirk and Dixie Geyer. Preceded in death by: parents Vern and Bessie Shirk, brothers Junie Shirk, Arnold Shirk, Carroll Shirk and Ralph Shirk; and daughter Diane Shirk.

A Remembrance Gathering and Celebration of Life will be held at the South Waterloo Church of the Brethren, 6227 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, IA on Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. A private family internment service will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN at a later date.
