H. Jay Vanderlinden

July 26, 1938 — July 3, 2015

H. Jay Vanderlinden, whose love of Beethoven, the Minnesota Vikings and joyous outbursts of song was exceeded only by his boundless love for his family (and possibly baseball Hall of Famer, Mike Schmidt), passed away Friday, July 3, 2015 in Red Wing, Minnesota. He was 76.

Jay was born singing--to Ruth (Clark) and C.E. "Chuck" Vanderlinden, in Billings, Montana, July 26, 1938. He was raised in Webster, South Dakota, where he graduated from high school in 1957. Jay earned a BA from the State University of South Dakota, Vermillion, attended the University of Colorado, Boulder on a singer/actor scholarship, and received an MA from Montana State University, Missoula.

Jay shared his enthusiasm for music with students for 34 years. He taught choral music in Red Wing, Lennox, SD and Sauk Rapids, MN. He briefly served as administrator of the Macalester College Music Department. He also sang professionally at numerous public and private events. Jay retired in 1997.

Jay was married for forty-nine years to Jean (Haugrud) Vanderlinden, also a music teacher (orchestra), with whom he had two children, Lisa and Chris. He was a dedicated father, eager grandfather and steadfast friend. He never met a stranger. All who knew and loved him will miss his beautiful tenor voice, zest for life, raucous laugh and "shadow conducting" from his armchair.

Jay is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Lisa Vanderlinden (Rob Garnett) of Fort Worth, TX; son, Chris Vanderlinden of El Paso, TX; five grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas and Alley Vanderlinden, and Gabriel and Benjamin Garnett; brother, Clark (Jean) Vanderlinden of Leavenworth, WA; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at United Lutheran Church, Red Wing, MN, on July 27, 2015 at 11:00 am with visitation starting at 10:00 am. Please do not send floral tributes as the family is highly allergic. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Red Wing Public Schools Foundation (Choral Music Program). Arrangements are by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
